Data recovery is an important tool for forensic investigators. Data recovery due to physical damage
Data can be recovered both after physical damage to a system and from logical, non-hardware damage.
There are a number of failures that can cause loss of data due to the physical damage to storage media. Hard disks can suffer mechanical failures, and CD ROMs can be scratched. There can be hard crashes of the system. Tapes can break. Sometimes the logical structure of the files is damaged too. That logical structure must be repaired before data can be recovered.
Usually physical damage cannot be repaired by the user and professional help is needed. Sometimes, of course, the physical damage was purposeful by those trying to hide information from authorities or others.
There are multiple techniques used to recover data lost as a result of physical damage. Sometimes simply replacing parts can solve the problem and images made of the physical disk with special software can provide a resource than can be analyzed so that files can be reconstructed.
Data recovery due to logical damage
Logical damage can occur when files or overwritten or “trashed”. Unfortunately, there is no evidence that files that have been overwritten, especially those that have been “scrubbed”, can be recovered.
Files that have simply been erased can often be recovered using a variety of commercial and free software tools. Data lost due to corrupted file systems can often be recovered, or at least some of it, by using specialized data recovery software. Online data recovery is also possible, so the technician does not have to physically be where the system is.
