Internet and network forensics
Even though it is digital in nature, internet traffic must still travel over some sort of network. It may travel from a small, home network into a larger wide area network or over a corporate network at a business location. There are times when it is difficult, if not impossible, to extract data from an individual computer and how it was used to access the internet. Disks can be wiped or browsing can be done anonymously. In that case, sometimes it is possible find traces of internet uses on the larger network.
The process of recovering this data is known as software or data disk recovery and it allows investigators to reassemble transferred files, look at keyword search history, and in some cases even recover data from email logs or chat sessions.
Network and internet information can be more volatile. Information that has not been captured on preserved on disk, can sometimes be found via the network but it is more unpredictable.
Ethernet
By applying forensic methods on the Ethernet layer, some tools can reconstruct websites, email attachments, and more.
TCP/IP
Again, tools can capture evidential information via the TCP/IP layer.
The Internet
Internet forensics can usually find a rich source of information. The digital evidence can include web browsing, email, newsgroups, chat and peer to peer traffic. Suspect information can be extracted to show when information related to a criminal or civil ligation matter was accessed. Email accounts are a very useful source of information. Since email headers can be faked, network forensics is sometimes needed to find the exact source of an email. Network forensics can also be used to find out exactly who is using a particular computer by finding account information.
The internet can be and is a great source of forensic information.
