Cell Phone Forensics – Maryland, Virginia & Washington, DC

Prudential Associates

Today, phone forensics is often about mobile phone or cell phone forensics. The reason is simple; these devices keep a record of how and where they are used by digitally storing this information. These phones can also be monitored by the cell phone service provider. Cell phone use can be an issue in case investigations or problems with a disloyal spouse.

If you believe you may benefit from this type of investigative service, contact Prudential Associates Investigations and Digital Forensics in Rockville, MD. Prudential provides cell phone forensic services in the Washington, DC, Virginia and Maryland areas.

What is mobile phone forensics?

Mobile phone forensics is a subcategory of digital forensics. Digital forensics is about the investigation and recovery of material found in digital devices. At one time digital forensics and computer forensics meant just about the same thing. That has all changed. Now it is about all devices that can store digital data, including cell phones and smart phones.

Digital forensics began with the personal computer explosion in the 1980s and evolved standards and practices fully in the 21st century after a couple of decades of haphazard development.

The most common forensic analysis is used to recover data to support or refute theories before a criminal court. Sometimes it is used to identify other suspects or crimes, and is especially useful in cases involving cheating spouses or divorce.

Today, eDiscovery is a type of discovery used in civil litigation. Intrusion investigation is a specialist investigation into the nature and extent of a network hack or intrusion.

Forensic tools

Since there are a variety of mobile phone systems, you need a variety of tools to access pertinent information. Tools must cover CDMA phones, GSM phones, External Memory Cards, and SIM phones. These tools are necessary to separate subscriber and equipment identities. They are used to collect evidence and to extract data without prejudice.

SIM cards

Mobile phone subscribers are issued with SIM cards, and yes, CDMA phones do have a type of SIM card, although SIMs are a generally associated with GSM phones. The SIM card can serve as evidence since it provides detailed printed on the surface. SIM cards also store some contact information and some SMS messages.

Cell phone storage

Today’s cell phones can store a significant amount of data including:

  • Contacts
  • Phone logs
  • Appointments
  • Tasks
  • Voice notes and recordings
  • SMS messages
  • Pictures
  • Videos
  • Application data
  • Email
  • Email attachments

This data is obviously useful in some forensic investigations.
